Declan

I can hear her music from the next block, the obnoxious blare of it spilling into the street. Telling myself I’m not sneaking up on her exactly, I park on the side of the building and past the dumpster at the mouth of the alley. There are no less than a dozen cats milling around outside the backdoor, yowling and pacing. Tess’s army of strays.

When they see me coming, they scatter, darting off in a dozen different directions. Trying the knob, I’m surprised and not a little angry to find it unlocked.

Turning the knob, I let myself into the room where they keep the hand-me-down washer and dryer Con got from our parents about a hundred years ago. From here, the music isn’t just ear-splitting. It’s deafening. How she hasn’t suffered substantial hearing loss from years of auditory abuse is a mystery.

Catching movement from the corner of my eye, I look over my shoulder to watch a few of the braver strays slink out of their hiding spots and make their cautious way forward.

There’s a box of dry food, a stack of plastic bowls and some cans of wet food on top of the fridge. I pull the tops off a few cans and set them outside the door before dividing what’s left in the box into bowls. When I set them outside the door, Tess’s army of cats swarm forward, attacking the cans and bowls like they haven’t eaten in weeks, which I know is bullshit because they’re the fattest band of strays I’ve ever seen.

Laughing, I shut the door and lock it. Turning away from it, I find Shadrach perched on top of the washer, her long dark tail swishing and curling with impatience. When I see her, she lets out a meow that sounds so plaintive that I keep laughing and pick her up. “There’s my girl,” I murmur at her, lifting her up to my chest. “You miss me?”

She purrs her answer, kneading my chest with her front paws while I give her a long stroke, from the tip of her ears to the tip of her tail. Her purr deepens and she starts rubbing her face along my jawline, eyes closed in ecstasy. “I can’t keep kidnapping you, so stop asking. The last time, your mom almost—”

Movement again. I lift my gaze from the cat to find Tess standing in the doorway of the laundry room watching us, her delicate face tight, hazel eyes blazing hot. I know that look. The last time I saw it, I’d just gotten finished telling her that I didn’t want to see her anymore. That I was bored. Done with her.

Something happened.

Because she knows I can see it, Tess spins on her heel and bolts down the short hallway connecting the laundry room to the main garage. Lifting Shad off my chest, I set her on her feet and go after her.

When I catch up to her she’s standing at the stainless-steel work table, sorting through a bunch of sockets.
